PTO Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls…all within a Catholic context. Along the way, the girls train together to walk or run in a 5K (3.1 mile) event which includes girls from all over Northern Virginia participating. Each girl will need a running “buddy” for the 5K, so moms or dads (or a relative or friend) are encouraged to get fit with their daughter and run with her in the event.

Coaches Eva Villalobos, St. Rita School PE teacher, and Liz Brazill , SRS mom, meet with the girls every Tuesday and Thursday on school grounds. Parents are welcome to come help (and train!) at practices, see note below.

New this season: St. Rita will offer separate programs for two age levels of girls: Girls on the Run for grades 3, 4 and 5 and Girls on Track for grades 6, 7 and 8. This structure reflects the way programs are run at traditional elementary (grades K–5) and middle schools (grades 6–8) in northern Virginia under GOTR NOVA in compliance with GOTR International. The curricula for the two programs are age specific and appropriate, allowing for more open discussions in the two groups. Practices will be held on the same days after school (Tues/Thurs 3:15–4:30pm).

URGENT NEED:  We need an assistant coach for the Girls on Track (middle school) team by Friday, Feb. 4 or we will not be allowed to offer GOT this season.

Online registration for the spring season runs February 11th–17th. We must have at least 8 girls in grades 3–5 sign up in order to host a GOTR program each season, AND at least 8 girls in grades 6–8 sign up in order to host a GOT program with a maximum of 20 each. If one team has enough girls but the other doesn’t then that team’s program will be held on its own. Go to the web site for GOTR of Northern Virginia (www.gotrnova.org) to sign up your daughter and read more details about the program. Please call Liz Brazill at 703-899-9523 if you need help with registration or you have any other questions.

The spring program runs March 8th–May 20th. We will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15–4:30pm. The Spring 5K event will be May 15th at George Mason University.

If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering during our sessions (VIRTUS required, click here for information on VIRTUS requirements) please contact one of the coaches:
